PTE Academic Speaking Strategies

In the PTE examination, speaking and writing are done at the same time. The speaking module will assess your listening and writing skills along with speaking abilities.

There are unique question types involved in the PTE. They judge your skills through different tasks like repeating the audio clip, response to the question and summarizing.

It starts with the personal introduction task which is followed by many different tasks that assess your speaking skills.

Here, we present you some strategies (for different question types involved) which make the PTE speaking part easier for you.

Read Aloud:

Speaking itself is an art and you should maintain authenticity in your tone. For that, you should know some voice modulation in your speech. Raise your voice when you start and at the end make your tone sink gradually. Such techniques will convey your expression along with your voice.

Mistakes are inevitable and if you commit a mistake, then don’t stop speaking and continue the speech. Practising tongue twisters will deliver an amazing output on the test day.

Repeating the Sentence:

This is a task that needs a lot of concentration as you have to memorize the matter and tell it back. To be more attentive while listening to the audio clip, close your eyes.

Remember, you will not be prompted with a ‘beep sound’ to start speaking. So, after the audio clip ends, you are supposed to start. If you cannot memorize the whole sentence as it is, then try to remember the keywords and repeat them.

Describe Image:

Identify whether the image is a bar-graph, pie- diagram or a line-graph etc.

In general, to describe an image, you need to know and follow some conventional jargons. For example, you should start your speech with the words such as, “illustrates, explains, depicts etc.”

Later, you should use some words such as- on the left-hand side/right-hand side, above, below, foreground, background etc. along with suitable adverbs and adjectives.

Plan to complete within 30-35 seconds and don’t leave any element

Retell the Lecture:

To retell a complete lecture, first, you have to understand the context of what is being said. To be effective in the speech, you should memorize the keywords. You don’t need to remember all the names. But instead, you can address them with the titles that reflect their profession (such as Dr. or professor etc.).

Focus on remembering the best few sentences. That is all you need to complete the task.

Short Answer Questions:

While answering the questions, try to use articles that make your answer clearer. In case, you are not aware of the answer, you can repeat the words in the question itself. But, making such a move; you should understand the context of the text clearly.
